Love history but you aren’t sure you should pursue it as a major in college? Sure, we all know it’s a tough job market out there, so you may be thinking: I love history, but the domain is just not marketable enough, unless I become a teacher.
On top of that, members of your own family might foster similar sentiments. Why can’t you choose a real major, your mom might say, one that provides with you a distinct training and of which you can be fairy sure will lead to a job?
But things aren’t so bleak as they used to be for those hoping to become historians. As one of the core discipline of the liberal arts, history provides a classic mode of learning. By learning about the past, students of offline or online college classes will be able to acquire critical skills such as how to think with rigor, write with clarity and precision, as well as how to organize and assess evidence and to analyze problems and interpret complex events. Check out the Enid Hall Griswold Memorial scholarship which is open for college juniors and seniors majoring in fields such as political science, history, government or economics.
The scholarship is offered by the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and in order to be considered for the $5,000 scholarships, candidates need to obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR chapter. However, you don’t have to be a member of DAR or have any affiliation with the association in order to apply.
Applying for this application has the student submitting the letter of sponsorship, as well as an unofficial transcript of your academic records so far.
What about GPA? Does that count for the judging committee? Yes, it will. Candidates should have a minimum GPA of 4.0 if they have any hope of being considered for this award.
The deadline for the scholarship is February 15, 2018.
