Got a knack for engineering? Apply for this $500 scholarship

Girls in engineering are a rare breed, for now

Are you passionate about engineering? Then you might want to think about applying for the scholarship offered by National Academy of Engineering

Millions of students are going to start college this fall, and in the process they will be making important choices that have a strong influence on their eventual career path. The most important one – which college major should I pursue?

These days more and more female students make choices that lead them away to form professions in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Women are an underrepresented segment in the STEM college population, but things are changing slowly.

Experts believe that girls need to be encouraged to develop spatial skills, thus laying the foundation for further scientific exploration as they grow, which is currently happening more and more often in the class room.

To promote female students’ interest in STEM and related fields, a host of corporations and foundations are offering scholarships to help these budding women of science pay for their offline or online education.

That’s right, with the advent of online education, many STEM degrees are available online, which makes it easier for those looking to change careers or who lack the necessary time to enroll in an on-campus degree to go to school.

Going back to grants for school, as a female student dabbing in STEM, you should always be on the lookout for funding opportunities aimed at your particular category. A quick search online will reveal some opportunities, but you might not be eligible for some.

Some have a minimum GPA requirement, while the others might target a specific niche of STEM. However, the majority usually welcome all STEM female students. As a girl pursuing a science degree, you should also make sure to dig up the available general STEM scholarships (open for both males and female) and submit your candidacy there also. The more applications you send the better chances of you actually getting your hands on a scholarship.

While many grants for school usually require you to submit documents such as resume, letters of recommendations and more, the scholarship offered by the National Academy of Engineering called EngineerGirl Essay Contest only has one requirement – submit an essay.

Applicants must be a student in the third through twelfth grades. In order to be considered for the $500, candidates will have to come up with an original plea to your city or county council that makes the case for an infrastructure improvement and gives details of you suggested solution.

High-school students are expected to write an essay between 1,000 and 1,500 words, but younger students can write shorter entries. As you can see you don’t necessarily have to be an engineering student in college to apply, but you need to have a passion for the subject and maybe looking to pursue a career in the field someday.

You have until February 1, 2018 to apply for this scholarship, so if you’re reading this now time is short and you should probably get to work.

While this scholarship is not as generous as others, it’s still good money you can put in your college fund and use someday towards paying for your education.
